HIV/AIDS still the grim reaper of women

It has been 21 years since the famous “grim reaper” advertisements appeared on our televisions, but HIV/AIDS awareness in Australia has not led to a reversal in the spread of the disease. Many Australians remain unaware of the issues surrounding the disease either on a local or a global scale.

Today, 1 December, is World AIDS Day, and UNIFEM Australia has launched a national
campaign to raise awareness about the disproportionate effects of HIV/AIDS on women.

Australia Says NO to Violence against Women

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Minister for Women, Tanya Plibersek and Attorney General, Robert McClelland have signed the UNIFEM campaign to end violence against women on behalf of the Australian Government.

Violence against Women in the Pacific

Violence against Women is pervasive across the Pacific.

UNIFEM Australia today launched its first two briefing papers on Violence against Women in Fiji and PNG.

These briefing papers provide detailed information including statistics, information on the legal framework within the country and information on projects which address violence against women.

There will be briefing papers coming out on each of the countries within the Pacific in the future.

Princess Lalla is President of the National Union of Moroccan Women and the National Monitoring Agency for Children’s Rights, and sister of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

Canada Says NO to Violence against Women

Ottawa — Helena Guergis, the Minister of State for the Status of Women, signed on to UNIFEM’s Say NO to Violence against Women campaign on behalf of the Government of Canada in Ottawa on 20 November 2008. She joins 159 Ministers and Heads of State of more than 55 Governments in adding her support to UNIFEM’s global call to action to eliminate violence against women.
