How does HIV/AIDS affect Women?

Worldwide, it is estimated that 15.4 million women over the age of 15 are living with HIV, and the numbers are growing. As you read these words, there are almost five new infections every minute – 6800 men, women and children every day.

But while there are similar rates of prevalence among both men and women, it is women who bear the brunt of the disease. Social, cultural, economic and legal discrimination and inequities mean that women are the least able to protect themselves from infection, the most likely to be blamed and stigmatised, and the most burdened by caring for the sick and for the orphans left behind by AIDS.

Protecting the human rights of women – the right to health, to freedom from violence and discrimination, and critically, the right to education – is the key to protecting millions more women from HIV.
